I am going to write about why Spanish people study English at school from 5-6 years old (now even from 3) but they grow up without knowing how to speak English at all!
If you ask me, the most important point is that they do not speak English ever! And hardly ever they hear some English. They study lots of grammar and go over it once and again, always the same things. If you have been learning English your entire life, how is it even possible that in high school you still start the course reviewing the verb ‘to be’? It is such a waste of time…
Moreover, many teachers do not really speak English… Most of them never speak in English to their students and you can easily tell that their knowledge of the language is not too wide. They always follow the text book, and guess what? Teachers have a special book with the correct answers for all the exercises, so they do not actually need to know English to teach it… Beats me how students are supposed to know English some day!
I guess there will be some exceptions (I hope so), but this has been my own experience and the one of most people I know. And I was supposed to go to a good school! It is very sad. Then, when you are a grown up, you decide to go abroad and learn it by yourself, in real life, which is sometimes hard, sometimes motivating, sometimes a challenge…. That is the point in which I am right now, living abroad and improving. And hopefully, after all those pointless years, I will be able to beat this language some day, once and for all! :-)
Thank you all for helping me with my writing! Take care!
