Summary
John Robe is a biographical film, based on the history in 1937 when the Japanese captured Nanjing, which was then the Chinese capital. My work is mainly inspired by those five characters in the film and also refers to Rabe’s diaries. It reveals from various aspects Nanking Massacre, during which hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians were slaughtered, and specifically from an angle of three innocent people’s death killed by the Janpanese soldiers, Rabe’s driver Mr.Zhang, Dr.Wilson and Madam Dupres.
During Nanking Massacre, Rabe is a heroic person, honored as “Chinese Hitler”. He possesses all the features of both western and eastern heros: spirit of sacrifice, member of the Nazi...however, he fights for the rights of the vulnerable groups in the war.At the same time, he’s just an ordinary employee of a German company located in China, who is ready to leave China due to promotion. He seems ordinary, wearing the fancy clothes of the upper class, carrying a pocket watch. His feeling for China is only because of work, nothing much. He says he comes just because his company needs him to do so.Therefore, the character modelling should be appropriate for the upper class’ lifestyles in Nanking.
The second character is Dr.Wilson, another witness of Nanking Massacre. He takes over most of the injured because the hospital has been overloaded. This character sliently but vigorously reflects that the civilians were both physically and mentally affected by this destructive and devastating war.
