The popularity of movies is the result of a psychological mechanism, ensued from the human biological system, regulating the mind and affecting the body of individuals.

Gratifications and pleasure stimulate the production of very powerful neuro transmitters for example: serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins which control many body and mind functions such as: the immune system and the contraction of muscles, as well as the mood of a person.

Furthermore, these biochemical substances significantly cause addiction. This addictive power is, then, immediately transferred into the primary source of pleasure and gratification which has started the biological process. In many ways, movies greatly act as a trigger for a stimulus reward mechanism as other positive (e.g. music) and negative (e.g. drugs) life experiences.

First, movies elicit gratification and pleasure in the audience, through a process of identification. The viewers empathize with the events and the characters portrayed in the movie and react emotionally as if they are really living those experiences in person. Even, the audience is so engrossed in a fictional story that the actors and their characters are often easily overlapped.

During their existences, all people endure many worries and frustrations. Watching movies provide a fast and convenient relief for their otherwise destructive emotions. Thus, watching movies lowers cortisol, which is the hormone responsible for physical and emotional reactions in case of danger and strain. Chronic stress originates when the level of cortisol in the blood is permanently too high. This is considered a harmful condition, causing many diseases and premature aging.

Then, humans are social animals, who need stability and reassurances to thrive. They prefer being part of a community in order to feel safe and content. It can be either a family, a tribe, a cultural group, or a nation. Hence, in order to be accepted in a group, they unconsciously mimic the behaviors and the tastes of others in that group. This is the mechanism on the basis of fandoms, trends and popularity. Watching and commenting movies represent an opportunity to interact with others emotionally and intellectually, and, ultimately, to belong to a group.

Finally, humans also need to be stimulated intellectually. Movies are powerful communication means of ideas and knowledge. They can enlighten, raise awareness and passion for culture. They contribute to shape society.

In conclusion, watching movies is an activity, which can deeply affect the viewers. Movies can be used either to enrich and amuse the audience or to deceive and manipulate it. Individuals should become aware of this possibility and develop their own emotional intelligence.
