Room

Body

The only object in the room that remained perfectly still was a huge sofa, in which two pretty women floated like on a balloon tied to the floor. Both were dressed in white and their skirts rippled and flapped, as if they had just returned from a quick flight around the house. I remained motionless for a while, listening to the lashing of the curtains and the wheezing of a portrait on the wall. Then I heard an explosion. Tom had slammed the windows shut and the wind remained trapped inside the room. The curtains and the pretty white dresses slowly alighted on the floor. One of the women, the youngest, whom I hadn’t yet met, smiled at me. It was one of those smiles that at first seem directed at the whole world, but that then are revealed to be directed only at you, exclusively at you, and that create an unexpected and pleasant bond.

Hi Tom!

I'm glad to hear from you, how's University going? You know computers are my first love and you're doing right in asking me for advice. There are two main academies I'd recommend to you.

On the one hand, the IT Training Centre's a very flexible institution. They adapt their courses so you can get the most of them. Also, they have lots of sales for students. If you're on an economy drive, this is an excellent choice.

On the other hand, The Computer Centre's known for its great one-to-one lessons. I myself experienced their private classes and I can tell you I haven't learnt so quickly anywhere else. In addition, if you decide to go for the group lessons, there's a wide variety of them, going from short, general courses to long, specialised ones.

Between you and me, I've seen over the years that people who choose individual classes end up most satisfied. That being so, my advice is to choose the latter, but ultimately it's up to you. Whichever you choose, you'll surely not regret taking classes.

All the best,

x

Letter to the Readalot Book Club

Body

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to give my opinion about the Readalot Book Club. I recently joined because of its book delivery service and I have to say that, even if the information is generally true, I take exception to some of the statements made in the advert.

To start with the good side, volunteers should be congratulated for the wide range and large number of books collected. Also, other readers' commentaries are decisive when picking one's next read and the club's strenuous effort to manage them all is perceptible and very satisfactory.

However, more than half of the sentences in the post are misleading. For instance, it is stated that new members receive three books of their choice for free. Yet, the list of the volumes offered is quite narrow. In addition, the delivery is far from being fast as the advert says. Deliveries are sometimes delayed as long as one week. On top of that, buying books through the club is supposed to be more economical than in shops, but this is only true for old works. Finally, nobody seems to be in charge of answering the phone, since the only thing one reaches to hear is the answerphone.

Some of these problems are easy to tackle. Firstly, there should be more appealing titles in the list of free books, this would truly entice more people. Secondly, the club would benefit from a better organisation regarding deliveries and helpline. And, last but not least, an improvement in dealing with providers should be considered, so as to be able to offer actual advantageous prices.

Having said that, I am conscious that this is all easier said than done, but I am also certain that it is possible to implement the ideas focusing on one at a time.

Yours faithfully,

x

Proposal: Ideas about Kennington School to cover in the TV programme

Body

Introduction

This proposal is intended to explain what relevant information about Kennington School should be included at the language college programme.

Interviews

Showing the direct opinion of students is a great idea, as it provides the watcher with trustworthy, first-hand information. In addition, being in the position the watcher would like to be, it is probable that the interviewed students will cover the most important features of the school. They should not be long to the point of boring the public, nor short as to lack important information. Lastly, opinions should come from a variety of pupils, to ensure they are biased by no one's academic performance.

Different departments

A good overview of the services should be included too. Not only opinions are important, but pictures as well. Through images, the audience is able to get a real taste of the school. In particular, some short recordings of different lessons would surely be well received. These recordings of the dynamic of the school can be very effective in catching the eye of the public.

Why these ideas will work best

Although more information could be included, such as social life and accommodation, this can be contained in the opinions of the students and some images of the corresponding installations. Also, the fact that all this should last not more but a fraction of the programme should be borne in mind.

Conclusion

In conclusion, these two ideas are to be the most suitable, in that they are reliable and impactful at the same time. They contain all kinds of information and, so, allow going over all the necessary aspects of the school.

Report: Attitudes to jobs in Spain

Body

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to analyse the change in prestige of some professions and predict future development.

Observed changes in the last years

On the one hand, careers like priesthood and teaching have lost respect over the years. In the past, priests were a central part of Spain's religious society. Everybody assisted Sunday mass and Catholicism was deeply rooted in their thinking. Teachers were talked to respectfully and regarded as educated, intelligent people. Now, not even religious people always attend masses and teachers are treated as anyone else or even disrespectfully. On the other hand, some years ago, technical (programming, scientific) positions were regarded as peculiar or unpopular jobs. However, today they are highly valued.

The causes of these changes

With the end of Franco's dictatorship, all the indoctrination-related jobs' image was damaged. Nowadays, schools provide, in general, unbiased education and people develop a more critical thinking. Moreover, teachers are not allowed to use violence in class anymore. Altogether, people enjoy freedom of opinion and, therefore, do not respect the Church and teachers so much. With regard to technical careers, technology has been developed so much that modern societies are highly dependent on it. That is why STEM experts have become so important and thereby respected.

Possible future regarding job prestige

This is already happening, but it is possible that, over time, politicians' status will decline even more. Not only in Spain, but also all over the world. For instance, during his government, Trump was seen nearly as a clown in a suit. The average person is getting more and more educated all over the world and, as a consequence, they are getting more critical with the authorities. This does not have to be a bad thing, as it can mean a further democratisation of politics and, by that, a better society.

Conclusion

To conclude, a society's development and changes in job status go hand in hand. This does not need to be bad, it is just a reflection of changes in people's thinking and societies' needs.

Pay and Pay for

Body

My English teacher has often pointed out the wrong way to use "pay".

I haven't concerned with that.

However, one day, a native speaker checked my journal entry and she pointed out the wrong way to use as same as my teacher.

I found there was a few corrections about "pay" and "pay for".

To be honest, I didn't understand the difference between the two of them, so I googled it.

I realized that "pay" is to pay money or pay someone and "pay for" is to pay money of something, but there are the specific way to use, such as "pay fee", "pay tax" and "pay fine" to name but a few.

The word "pay" is easy to remember for Japanese people, but it has a few the way to use, so I'm not sure but I think that most of them don't use it completely.

Proposal to begin a monthly magazine in English

Body

Introduction

This proposal is intended to present the project of a monthly magazine in English for the students of this college.

Why start the magazine

English has recently become the most popular lingua franca. Therefore, it is essential for all the students to master it and this magazine could help them considerably. In addition, the launch of a magazine in English by the college would mean a great deal to international students, who cannot currently access much information about the institution and its events due to the language. Last but not least, feedback from students' questionnaires suggests they lack a sense of belonging to the college, a problem that would be easily tackled with the magazine.

What the first issue would include

Our idea is to include information about the college as well as some interesting articles with educational purposes. In the first edition, a list of the events held this month at the college could be included to address the former and a diverse range of articles about topics from music to the university's history to confront the latter. The most important events would have their own space with some extra information and specifications. Moreover, the articles would include a section to reinforce the vocabulary learned by reading them.

What support and financial help you need from the college

Finally, no matter how enthusiastic we get about it, if we have not the consent and necessary financial backing, the magazine will certainly not success. The main costs would be those of the printing, as the writers are volunteers and are not going to get paid. Besides, we would be very thankful if the college allowed us to advertise the magazine throughout the faculties.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we would like to start a monthly magazine in English aiming at the students, yet we cannot do it by ourselves. We need the approval and support of the university.
